Continuing Medical Education

Intended Audience

This activity was developed for dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and core cosmetic physicians who use neurotoxins in facial cosmetic enhancements.

Statement of Need

The aesthetic use of neurotoxins is commonplace in many cosmetic dermatology practices in the United States. Despite the number of procedures, which increases each year, the use of advanced injection techniques based on individual facial features is a relatively new concept. Additionally, the recent FDA approval of a new neurotoxin offers clinicians and their patients another option to consider in determining the optimal treatment based on safety and efficacy. Differences in long-term effect, reconstitution, dosing, and possibly field of effect require an understanding of the clinical utility of this new agent. This 2-hour on-demand program offers participants keen insights into achieving optimal results with neurotoxins, based on understanding of muscle kinesiology, differences in pharmacokinetics, and injection techniques. Key recommendations and guidance from a recently held international consensus conference will be featured.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Explain the scientific differences between neurotoxin agents, including basic structure, mechanism of action, and the science of unmasking
  • Outline neurotoxin clinical trials performed in the United States and internationally that may help clinicians in their understanding of the similarities and differences between available agents, including pharmacokinetics, key facial muscle kinesiology, indications and contraindications, reconstitution and storage, dosing, injection, diffusion, and long-term effect
  • Describe the importance of dosing ranging in various facial areas and its potential impact on effectiveness
  • Demonstrate proficiency in communicating with patients to establish appropriate outcomes and ensure patient satisfaction; discuss multimodal approaches to cosmetic enhancement
  • Articulate key recommendations and guidance from the International Consensus Conference on the Use of Neurotoxins in Facial Aesthetics
